Some suggestions for choosing a number plate: You could choose your name, initials or nickname. Other options include hobbies or the type of car that you plan to put the registration plate onto (e.g. BMW, VW etc). Remember that some numbers look similar to letters (4 and A, 7 and T etc). A number plate can make an excellent present for someone's special day.
Types of registration plate:
Current Style: Take the format of two letters followed by two numbers, a space and then three letters. The first two letters show where a car was first registered (e.g. WD - Exeter, SM - Edinburgh), the two numbers show the date (e.g. 03 would be Mar-Aug 2003, and 54 would be Sep 2004-Feb 2005) and the last three letters are random. These were first released in September 2001.
Prefix Style: In use from 1983 till 2001. A single letter was used to show the year (e.g. P was Aug 1996-July 1997), latterly the letters changed every 6 months. The prefix letter is followed by a number 1-3 digits long, a space and then three letters.
Suffix Style: Similar to the prefix style plates but in reverse. Three letters, a space, 1-3 digits and then a suffix year letter. These were in use between 1963 and 1983.
Dateless: Combination of 1-3 letters and 1-4 numbers separated by a space. The letters may come before or after the numbers.
